Gordon Murray, the famed McLaren F1 designer, has unveiled the upgraded version of his ground breaking T.25, which he called the city car design. Now, his design firm Gordon Murray Design, has unveiled the T.27 and they have dubbed it as the “world’s most efficient electric vehicle”.
The T.27 is a pure electric drive vehicle and the design of the vehicle considered optimizing all the aspects of the car, from the packaging, weight and performance. Its main goal is to be the efficiency benchmark for electric vehicles of the future.
The design centers around the powertrain of the vehicle, done by Gordon Murray Design partner Zytek Automotives. The result was an innovative, lightweight and fully integrated motor with a battery and control system, still with maximum efficiency in mind.
The design of the vehicle is quite diminutive but still compliant with current European Economic Community regulations of deformable front high-speed impact crash results of having zero cabin intrusion.
The T27 is only two and half meters long and a meter and a little over a quarter meter wide. The car weighs just 680 kgs or about 1,500 lbs with the battery included. The turning cycle of the vehicle is six meters and has a 25kW electric motor, equivalent to about 33 horsepower. The vehicle top speed is about 105 kph with a range of 160 kilometers on a full battery charge.
According to Murray, "lightweight is the most powerful tool we have in our armory in the fight against emissions and fuel consumption. This is true of all cars and especially so with electric vehicles! A lightweight car means a lightweight battery increasing the levels of safety and reducing the retail price dramatically. The T.27 represents a huge step forward in protecting our mobility and our environment.”
