A new program unveiled by the Energy Saving Trust has been urging companies to be more responsible with regards to their carbon and fuel expenditures. To assist in this program, a new video has been unveiled in the realities of the use of an electric car.
The video highlighted the beneficial effects and the consequent opportunities in the purchase and investment in an electric vehicle. The video also underscored how companies can lower their carbon emissions, as well as offer cost effective solutions for other wasteful and polluting practices currently in use.
The presenter is Robert Llewellyn and he discussed major concerns regarding electric vehicles. These are charging, range, cost and the viability of having an electric vehicle fleet compared to having internal combustion engine fleet.
As shown in the video, the main issue of the range of the electric vehicle is not a drawback for organizations or individuals. It has been found that company vehicles travel well within the range of the electric cars. In addition, on the cost side, the fuel used in electric vehicles is much more cheaper compared to current prices of petrol and diesel.
A small family hatchback with an efficient diesel engine costs about £1,050 +VAT in fuel costs to drive 10,000 miles per year. In comparison, a similar electric vehicle would only cost £240 +VAT per year in current electricity prices at economy 7 rates. This would be a clear savings of £810 per year per vehicle.
According to Llewelyn, “Living with an electric car has been an amazing project to work on with the Energy Saving Trust. The video really highlights the realities of buying, owning and living with an electric vehicle and serves as a real myth buster. I have been driving electric cars for the last couple of years and most recently the Nissan Leaf. Driving an electric car is a breath of fresh air. If you really want to understand more about EVs, these films are a great place to start.”
In addition, the Trust has been providing new research on improving efficiency in the use of electric cars. It has been found that the efficiency would be increased by at least 20% through subtle changes in driving habits. It has created the Smarter Driving pilot programme to train drivers to be able to save energy and increase the EVs range.
On the average, an electric vehicle has a driving range of 100 miles before needing to be recharged. This distance can diminish significantly depending on the driving technique utilized in its operation. The Smarter Driving techniques teaches the optimal use of regenerative braking during deceleration, road anticipation and foresight, and how to avoid incessant acceleration and deceleration. The energy consumed before the program and after the learning sessions to show improvements in driving skills.
The Chief Executive of the Energy Saving Trust, Mr. Philip Sellwood has said,” Over the last few years there has been much debate about the viability of the electric car and the part they play in today’s carbon conscious society. It’s obvious that there is a huge benefit in terms of electric vehicles in terms of cutting emissions on the road, but it is also clear that they can make economic sense for some organizations and individuals.”
He further added, “Our video offers the perfect opportunity to weigh up the pros and cons of purchasing an electric car, and with grants and support on offer, there has never been such a good time to consider doing so. Businesses and consumers both need access to clear and impartial information, allowing them both to make a balanced and informed choice in their potential purchase of an electric car.”
